The product and idea came from a general need. Instead of branching out into the whole country. The .nyc domain name seemed the right thing to do.
Who is your competition?
There isn’t a direct competitor with the same platform or service. Social media accounts that display event content, websites and email newsletters. Any marketing channel that promotes events.
Who is the user?
Anyone creating the content and the event. Ranging from hosts, promoters or DJs.
Is there a moment you are particularly proud of in your startup journey?
We did a “Shark Tank” style pitch at a local church where we won $1,000 to go towards our idea. That was the genesis of Whim. We launched the app on June 1, 2016, with a year of preparation and testing prior to that.
Do you have any advice for someone thinking about starting their own business in New York?
If you can make it here you can make it anywhere.
We knew if we could corner the market in New York City, we can do it anywhere. There are so many events and happenings in New York.Our product is focused on managing the noise, and getting to the event you want to go to, in front of you.
For new businesses starting in New York City [.nyc is] a great idea. Because it’s a lot cheaper, it’s more accessible, and it’s a constant reminder to your consumers that you’re catering to that specific area.
Why the .nyc domain?
Looking throughout the available options, we knew we needed to decide what fits whim. Once it was obvious that whim.nyc was available, it made sense to select it.
Our product is local to New York - whim.nyc is easy to say, easy to type.
How has New York influenced your company and product?
Having a footprint in New York City forces us to focus on things that will be helpful anywhere else. People in New York City want the information as fast as possible, as simply as possible and as elegant as possible. That structures the way in which we design we product.
What is next for whim.nyc?
We are focused on serving New York City. We plan to ramp up our website with content and feature services.
