"New York and the Internet are two things that have become overwhelmingly crowded. The two spaces, physical and virtual, overlap today when the .nyc top-level domain goes on sale to the general public, USA TODAY reported. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a California-based nonprofit, has been busy reviewing domain name applications for nearly three years as some 1,300 domain names start rolling out.

"Domain names are 21st century real estate,"" said Mike McLaughlin, senior vice president and general manager of domains for GoDaddy.com, which has been authorized to sell the newly approved names. The theme is the increasing personalization and targeting of the Internet."
