"At least two applicants have laid claim to more than 1,000 web addresses ending with the new .nyc domain, and will have to outbid each other in high-stakes auctions later this month, city officials said. Wednesday marks the first day that the general public can acquire the rights to a site with the .nyc moniker, the culmination of a process that started six years ago in City Hall as a way to anchor city businesses, nonprofits and personalities in the digital world and promote the city's brand."
